I know many of us are feeling overwhelmed and untethered with the barrage of changes at the federal level. I think knowledge is grounding, so I asked historian

to talk to me about women’s suffrage and the SAVE Act—historical women gaining the right to vote and efforts right now to suppress women (and other voters). Please watch! Her book Becoming the Pastor’s Wife: How Marriage Replaced Ordination as a Woman’s Path to Ministry is out this week and she still took time for this chance to share with all of us!

Extra Credit: In our video, Beth mentions an interactive map of women’s voting. You can find that here.

For further reading, she suggests Susan Ware’s Why They Marched (it discusses the racism of Stanton and Anthony too) and Martha Jones’s Vanguard: How Black Women Broke Barriers, Won the Vote, and Insisted on Equality for All.

If you like this teach-in, join my next one. It will be **LIVE** this Thursday night, March 20, 7:30 pm eastern (6:30 pm central) with journalist Angela Denker.

We’ll figure out some way for you to ask questions in real-time. Subscribers to our Substacks will receive links Thursday by lunch. Non-subscribers can sign up for the link here.

When religion, politics, and gender are so entangled in our lives and news, please consider supporting reporting that helps clarify these topics by becoming a paid subscriber (this helps me keep as many posts as possible free to all)!
